 On the occasion of the declaration of Baghdad as the capital of Arab women, and the twenty years since the founding of the AWO, the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, represented by the Iraqi Women Empowerment Department in the capital, Baghdad, held the conference on combating gender-based violence and supporting the recovery of survivors.

The Director General of the Iraqi Women's Empowerment Department, Chair of the current session of the Arab Women's Committee, Dr. Yousra Karim Mohsen, confirmed during her speech that opened the conference, protecting women from violence is the principle of equality among members of society, and represents an entry point for women's involvement in sustainable development.
She pointed out that the phenomenon of gender-based violence requires official and unofficial agencies to take the necessary measures to reduce them and address their effects.
She explained that the Iraqi government is working in coordination with institutions, ministries and partners to develop visions, policies, strategies and plans, and to adopt important initiatives to support and empower Iraqi women. She indicated that one of the most important of these measures is the establishment of protection centers from domestic violence.
